What Is Equine Massage Therapy
Equine therapy and massage was originally developed for sports and related careers and the overall health and well-being of the animal. It has been used since the 1980's in the horse racing industry and has gradually expanded to include show, trail, working, and family horses because of its outstanding results. In the equine, 60% of the horse's total body weight is the muscular system. A muscle which is unable to accommodate the movement placed upon it can result in a pull or even a tear. Massage therapy is a non-invasive, holistic approach to treat the cause, not the symptoms. Tightening & adhesions in muscles are broken up by using different strokes that allow oxygen and blood flow to return to greater capacity. The direct pressure technique is geared t the prevention and cure of muscle spasms, tensions and strains that can cause shortening of stride, stiffness, and even lameness. Stress is relieved and the horse is able to return to more complete soundness. It can be used as a preventative tool as well as a corrective one.
